Re: intersection family violence and sexual abuse

Nicki, I have published a few articles that provide data on the correlation
between the degree to which people have experienced not only domestic
violence and sexual abuse, but also physical abuse, psychological
maltreatment, and neglect. Although this data relied on adult self-report
or parent report (rather than substantiated child protection cases), it
certainly provides some evidence for considerable co-occurrence of the two.
The articles you may be interested in are:

Higgins, D. J., & McCabe, M. P. (1998b). Parent perceptions of maltreatment
and adjustment in children. Journal of Family Studies, 4, 53-76.

         Higgins, D. J., & McCabe, M. P. (2000b). Multi-type maltreatment
and the long-term adjustment of adults. Child Abuse Review, 9, 6-18.
         Higgins, D. J., & McCabe, M. P. (2000c). Relationships between
different types of maltreatment during childhood and adjustment in
adulthood. Child Maltreatment, 5, 261-272.

An additional ms. is also in press:
         Higgins, D. J., & McCabe, M. P. (in press-b). Maltreatment and
family dysfunction in childhood and the adjustment of children and adults.
Journal of Family Violence.

In another article, I demonstrated that sexually abused university women
reported significantly higher levels of family violence (a composite
measure of witnessing and experiencing physical and verbal violence within
the family) than the women who were not sexually abused. See Table 1 in
the following ms:
         Higgins, D. J., & McCabe, M. P. (1994). The relationship of child
sexual abuse and family violence to adult adjustment: Toward an integrated
risk-sequelae model. The Journal of Sex Research, 31, 255-266.

Hope this is the sort of thing you are looking for.
I am also interested in hearing of other citations people may have of
overlap between sexual abuse and DV.
Cheers,
Daryl.
