While there will be  a number of surveys and studies that will help you (Widom
comes to mind) you may find that the recent work by the UK Department of Health
is presented helpfully in this respect, considering the large numbers of
children whose lives are in some way compromised before focussing on the
specific groups in need, and in need of protection. You wil find it at
http://www.doh.gov.uk/scg/cin.htm - it's a big document and there is an
associated practice guide, but well worth scanning.
