Use of corporal punishment with abused children

I would like to know if there has been any research on the topic of the
use of corporal punishment with children who have been abused/and or
neglected, especially children in the foster care system; or research on
appropriate disciplinary approaches to use with children who have a
history of abuse and/or neglect. Virginia's Department of Social
Services has proposed to make changes in foster care regulations that
would allow the use of "non-abusive" corporal punishment. A coalition
for the protection of children in foster care has formed in response to
this proposal and needs scientific data to substantiate that the use of
physical discipline would only further the victimization of these
children. Such information will be presented at a public hearing in
September.
Thanks.
