Re: Measures for Child Welfare Workers

We assess competency through two tests. A written, multiple
choice test is administered at the end of Phase One (six weeks)
of pre-service training and a performance test is administered at
the end of Phase Two (approx. nine months). We do a pre-test of
the written test periodically at the beginning of training to get
an indication of the amount of learning which takes place in
Phase One. However, given that the knowledge, skills, and
abilities are specialized in nature, it is acceptable to assume
that new staff without experience or specialized education in
child protection do not have the necessary KSAs when they are
hired.

Hope this is helpful.

I am a doctoral student at Florida State University, working on a
research project regarding the success of training for child welfare
workers. Are there any measures you would suggest for assessing the
competency of child welfare workers and the impact of training on the
worker's competency? Any information or citations you could send me
would be greatly appreciated.
