perpetrator punishment

One of my students is completing her master's thesis looking at
perceptions of appropriate punishments for perpetrators of shaken baby
syndrome. Can anyone help us in locating literature for child physical
abuse in general on the effects of
perpetrator gender and/or perpetrator relationship to victim (in our case
parent vs caregiver) on 1) beliefs about appropriate punishment; or 2)
actual sentencing patterns. We are looking at both legal
sanctions as well as perceived need to prevent contact with this or other
children.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
