In Scotland, we are just beginning to explore use of Family Group
Conferences (FGCs), based on the New Zealand model, in Child Protection. A
couple of local government (statutory) authorities (my own - Dundee City
Council and Moray Council in the North east of the country) are doing this
in collaboration with the NGO, Children 1st (formerly the Royal Scottish
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children).
Cathy Dewar, from Children 1st, has written a couple of very good
explanatory papers that set out the philosophy and process of the FGC. FGCs
are now becoming well established in a number of areas in England and Wales
(Birmingham, Gwynned, Hampshire, Warwickshire and parts of London).
Cathy Dewar can be contacted via: annestafford@compuserve.com
I would be very interested in reading the results of any
research/evaluation programmes that have been carried out elsewhere in the
world, into the effectiveness of FGCs as a means of achieving positive
outcomes for children.
