I would like to tap into your collective expertise for a moment. I am conducting a longitudinal study of married couples, all of whom have been married less than three years. The main goal of the project is to examine how self-reported child maltreatment history in some of these couples is related to current and ongoing marital functioning. At the same time, however, many of the couples are starting to have children. Thus, I am quite interested in how parental maltreatment history in its various forms may be related to initial parenting practices and parent-child relationships. Regarding this issue, I have two main questions:
1. What parenting and/or parent-child constructs seem most relevant to a history of parental abuse? (currently, the children are all under the age of 2)
2. What instruments (self-report or observational) would you use to measure these constructs?
I am happy to reply individually with more details, but thought that this might stimulate some thinking. If people reply back channel, I will compile responses and send them to the list.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
