<DIV><FONT size=2>Please be cautious about generalizations. I am a large
framed male and entered this field reluctantly at first (I believed in your
generalization) and then was surprised to see most children respond positively
to me. Almost no child I interview "cringes with fear" although anxiety
seems to proceed most exams even BEFORE meeting me. I think this is
normal. I have now interviewed more than 3000 children from 3 yo to
21 yo with probably 90+% of the time establishing good rapport and ensuing
productive information gathering. I have a small frame female colleague
who has just as difficult time with my failures.</FONT></DIV>

ingredients are interviewer personality, training, interest in being there; and
lastly the environment of the interview room ( I prefer a minimally
distractible; ie. no toys and child at eye level with me). </FONT></DIV>

Videotaped Interviews<BR><BR></FONT></DIV>
<DIV>Within the UK children who are subjected to certain types of abuse or
neglect may be jointly interviewed by the social work department and police.
These interviews are sometimes recorded on video for use in any future
criminal proceedings, and also can be used for therapeutic
interventions.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>A colleague is carrying out some research as to the views of children
and young people about the interview experience. He is keen to access any
research carried out outside the UK on the outcomes/benefits/problems with
video taped interviews with children who have been abused. Any responses
would be appreciated, even if only to indicate regions where joint video
taped interviews take place.</DIV>
