To obtain a copy of an article published by the Christian Research Journal
that is critical of Growing Families International, call (949) 858-6100.
The aricle is carefully written and footnoted in a scholarly fashion, and
it is very interesting to read a critique that is from within the fold,
rather than from secular researchers. There are concerns about
the methods of GCI as an organization, not just about the parenting information.

The real question for CD Maltreatment Listservers, I think, is this:
What is it about authoritarian, dogmatic parenting training that has such
appeal, and how can other parenting approaches reach similar audiences?
In light of current much-publicized incidents of school and street violence,
for example, many more parents worry that their children will be wayard,
rebellious or disobedient ("hot," as they say in Haiti). Well
meaning parents crack down on early signs of free will and independence,
which are cognitively reframed as sin, and they do not not recognize the
child's need for autonomy.

In a sense this is a cross cultural issue. To restate the question,
how can the secular child development research community reach conservative,
religious, well educated parents with a different message about childrearing?
