RE: Indigenous CPS Research

Good Morning,
The U.S. Indian Child Welfare Act point of contact in Southern California is
with Mel Madrigal or Ron Wood at 1-800-969-4237. Basically Native Americans
have their own system and have the legal right to take court jurisdiction of
Native American children, to preserve the race from extinction.

Dear Subscriber,

I am writing seeking information which may contribute to the improvement of
child protection services for Indigenous Australians. I represent a small
team of researchers working on a review of programs and models for
indigenous child protection, commissioned by the (State) Department for
Community Services, New South Wales (NSW), in conjunction with the
University of Technology, Sydney.

The project aims to review an international range of innovative and
collaborative service models for Indigenous child protection, with a focus
on models involving community control and development. We would like to
identify and research models designed and implemented in a wide range of
community environments with varying levels of social cohesion and other
resources. We are also interested in relevant progressive models not
specifically designed for use with indigenous communities.

To date we have experienced difficulty in obtaining relevant material. We
would be very grateful for any information you may be able provide to us.

Many Australian Indigenous organizations have shown interest in overseas
models, and suggested the adoption of similar child protection systems in
their communities. The findings of our research will contribute to the
development of new service models in collaboration with NSW Indigenous
communities. Our research will also be of immediate relevance to other
service providers of Indigenous child protection from around the country,
both governmental and community-based.

There is a wide range of information and resources that could be relevant to
the review. For example:
* policy documents
* academic work
* reports of Commissions and Inquiries.
* child welfare legislation
* service model plans and frameworks
* monitoring, evaluation and review reports
* statistical reports

This project also involves the creation of a database containing the contact
details of organizations involved with Indigenous child protection. This
database is intended to facilitate and encourage communication and exchange
between organizations in Australia and other parts of the world. We would be
very grateful for your permission to include your organization on this list,
if relevant. We are aware that some organizations may not wish to be
included, and are respectful of their right to choose. If you consent to
inclusion, we will need your preferred contact details, including:
* postal address
* telephone number
* fax number

and, if available:
* email address
* website address.

On completion of our report, we will provide an emailed copy to all
contributors. We will also be very happy to do the same for
non-contributors, on request. Thank you for taking the time to consider our
requests, and for any information which you may be able to provide to us.

regards,

Peter Duncan-Jones
