<< I have seen references in the literature to a number of statewide efforts
in the family support field, and was wondering if anyone knows if they are
continuing today. These programs include Minnesota's Early Childhood and
Family Education Program, Missouri's Parents as Teachers, programs funded
through the Illinois Ounce of Prevention Fund, programs funded through the
Kentucky Education Reform Act, and state funded family support centers in
Maryland. Any help with this would be most appreciated.

Dear Dr. Meezan--you might be interested in two initiatives that are
statewide in California--both representing enhancements of the Healthy
Families America model: The California Safe and Healthy Families (Cal-SAHF)
initiative, and the Answers Benefiting Children (ABC)Initative, both out of
the California Department of Social Services Office of Child Abuse
Prevention. The Cal-SAHf program operates in 7 sites, and represents an
enhanced HFA model. The ABC program embeds family support programs within
family resource centers, and seeks fundamental changes in paradigms and
systems at the county level. This effort is just now being implemented in 17
sites. Both approaches include both home based and center based efforts and
rely strongly upon interdisciplinary teams which include persons skilled in
health, substance abuse, mental health, and child development.
