Filial Deprivation
I am interested in "filial deprivation" in the context of a broader study I
am planing into the way parents accused of child abuse and neglect,
perceive, react and make sense of child welfare intervention they receive.
"Filial deprivation," is the parental experience of loss and grief when a
child enters care.
As far as I can tell, the term (a play on Bowlby's "maternal deprivation")
seems to have been coined by Jenkins and Norman in 1972 "in "Filial
deprivation and foster care" by Columbia University Press.
A search of Silver Platter Social Work Abstracts from 1977 to 1998/09, only
brings up 3 references to filial deprivation. These are doctoral
dissertations by D Rejent, Jacques Vachon and Phebe Rich. A ProQuest
search only brought one reference to the term, which was an article that
mentioned the phenomena in discussing another topic.
What I am wondering is whether there are so few references to this term
becase:
a/ little attention is or has been paid to the emotional impact removing a
child has on parents or
b/ this impact on parents is being addressed in the literature but not
under the term "filial deprivation."
Any light list members can shed on this topic would be appreciated. Also,
if the latter suggestion above is accurate (b), any references or pointers
that can be made so I can locate this literature would be appreciated.
