Director of the National Center on Child Abuse Prevention Research
A Program of Prevent Child Abuse America

Position Description:  The Director of Research provides national leadership 
to both researchers and practitioners in the development and application of 
knowledge about child abuse and neglect prevention.  This leadership position 
offers the opportunity to impact practice and policy in child maltreatment 
prevention through applied research.  The Director of Research will conduct 
original research to expand the knowledge base on child abuse prevention, and 
will have access to a nationwide network of Healthy Families America family 
support programs, providing the capacity for broad-based longitudinal 
research.  National leadership opportunities include a Research Network of 50 
members in 38 states, and Prevent Child Abuse America's* network of state 
chapter affiliates.  A sustainable, budgeted position within an 
inter-disciplinary national team, the Director of Research will help to shape 
the future of the Research Center and play a central role in informing 
prevention program development, advocacy efforts, and overall vision of the 
organization.  Opportunities for professional development and national 
visibility include:
 * Convening a national research conference of experts on key topics in child 
abuse; 
 * Developing partnerships with academic institutions;
 * Working with an Advisory Panel of noted experts in child abuse research, 
including Randall Alexander, Byron Egeland, Martin Finkel, David Finkelhor, 
James Garbarino, Richard Gelles, Richard Krugman, and Gary Melton. 

Proven Capabilities of Candidate:
 * Doctoral degree in related discipline
 * Program of applied research in an area relevant to child maltreatment 
prevention
 * Demonstrated success in securing grants
 * Extensive experience with direction of research projects
 * Knowledge of child maltreatment and prevention science demonstrated by    
publication history
 * National research reputation
 * Leadership and management skills 
 * Collaborative work style
 * Superior communication skills

The National Center on Child Abuse Prevention Research
In 1986, Prevent Child Abuse America* established the National Center on 
Child Abuse Prevention Research in recognition of the need for a systematic 
research effort in this field.  Since its inception, the National Research 
Center has played a leadership role in both program evaluation and the 
development of programs and policies to prevent child maltreatment. In 
addition, the Research Center serves as a resource for child abuse 
information to the field and interested public. The design, implementation, 
and reporting of all Research Center activities are overseen by the Director 
of Research, who reports directly to the Executive Director.
