Ms.Carnahan,

I use Cynthia Tower's text, Understanding Child Abuse and Neglect, 3rd Edition, and in Chapter Three there's a brief summary of factors that account for variations in the reported effects of child abuse. She also cites H.P. Martin's work from the seventies about these factors. This might be a place to start.
