re: substance abuse and child abuse

Dear Hyungmo Kim,

The National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect Information has two
publications that may be of interest to you as you begin your research on
the link between substance abuse and child abuse.

The first publication, A Report to Congress: 1993 Study of Child
Maltreatment in Alcohol Abusing Families, examines the major findings of an
NCCAN-sponsored study that reported on the incidence of child abuse in
alcoholic families and on the relationships between child abuse and familial
alcoholism; the Report is available for a cost recovery fee from the
Clearinghouse.

The second publication, which is from the User Manual Series, is Protecting
Children in Substance-Abusing Families (1994). This free publication offers
information for professionals on how to identify parental substance abuse,
assess the needs of the family affected by the alcohol/substance abuse,
develop service plans, and provide intervention. A bibliography is
included. This publications can be viewed and/or downloaded from our web
site at: http://www.calib.com/nccanch; please click on the icon for
"Publications" and select the User Manual Series and the desired title.

In addition to these publications, our database includes a very
comprehensive collection of abstracts of journal articles, grant reports,
technical reports, and research papers on substance/alcohol abuse and child
maltreatment, including FAS and drug-exposed infants. This database is
searchable via our web site at: http://www.calib.com/nccanch; please click
on the icon for "Databases" and follow the user friendly instructions. If
you need assistance, please call our toll-free number, (800) 394-3366, and
speak to an Information Specialist. Pre-packaged database searches on
"Substance Abuse" and "Drug Exposed Infants" are available for a small fee.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance to you.

Sincerely,

Sandi McLeod, Senior Information Specialist
