Itwo resources which may be helpful:

Richie,Beth. Compelled to crime: Battered black women in prison.

This is a fascinating book based on a study done by Richie of
incarcerated black women. They speak about their childhood experiences
and their adult experiences with abusive partners. Last I heard, Richie
was a professor of Public Health at Hunter College in New york city.


The second, this past weekend National Public Radio did a show on prison
life on their program, This American Life. It included a long (fifteen
minute?) segment on mothers in prison.
