Carol,

Look at the Gallup poll report from December 1995 for data on poverty and
abuse, neglect, and sexual abuse. The relationships betwen single parent
status, poverty and both physical abuse and sexual abuse are there. Of the
top of my head, both having a household income less than $20,000 and being
a single parent had odds ratios of 3 for physical and sexual abuse. The
report is called "Disciplining Children in America" Princeton, NJ, Gallup
Organization. Some data from the survey, although not the poverty data,
are included in Straus M, Hamby S, et al. Identification of child
maltreatment with the parent-child conflict tactics scales: development and
psychometric data for a national sample of American parents. Child Abuse &
Neglect 1998; 22:249-270.
