This note is in response to a concern someone expressed a few weeks ago
regarding whether passive exposure to cocaine will yield positive results
in a hair analysis.  Indeed cocaine is in the air and on the money we all
handle every day.  In the substance abuse studies we are doing, the lab
analyzing our hair samples conducts an extensive washing procedure
prior to analysis.  The washing process removes cocaine on the hair from
passive exposure.
