Reply to Michael Fraga
Michael Fraga has presented some important issues with regard to the role of
teachers in responding to child abuse. However, it should be noted that
educators have always had to address issues related to child maltreatment
since they serve as the first line of defense in identifying abuse and must
contend with the impact of trauma on the educational functioning of children
in the classroom setting. In fact, educators are so critical to the
identification process that they are included as mandated reporters in every
state. Nonetheless, many have been ineffective in fulfilling this role and
function due to inadequate training, the barriers of myths and
misperceptions, and isolation from supportive and collaborative resources in
the community.
The intent of this SIG is not to include among educators' responsibilities
the role of therapist or forensic evaluator. In contrast, this SIG seeks to
promote research that can contribute to protective and responsive school
environments while evolving collaborative partnerships between the community
and school settings. It also should be noted that the term educator
broadly refers to any school professional who functions in the educational
setting, including teachers, administrators, counselors, and school
psychologists.
"The American Educational Research Association is concerned with improving
the educational process by encouraging scholarly inquiry related to
education and by promoting the dissemination and practical application of
research results. AERA is the most prominent international professional
organization with the primary goal of advancing educational research and its
practical application. Its more than 22,000 members are educators;
administrators; directors of research, testing or evaluation in federal,
state and local agencies; counselors; evaluators; graduate students; and
behavioral scientists. The broad range of disciplines represented by the
membership includes education, psychology, statistics, sociology, history,
economics, philosophy, anthropology, and political science."
