Re: New AERA SIG

The first piece that comes to mind reading your "mission statement" is the obvious, 'scope of practice.' Teachers are already overwhelmed with budget cutbacks, full inclusions, increased student to teacher ratios and expansive administration. To include in their purlieu that which initially was the operating environment of the school psychologist, for less than the same money seems an up hill battle on the one hand, and a reluctance to acknowledge the systems irresponsibility to provide ancillary services for its charges.

Admittedly, this is a cursory response, but that withstanding how does your proposed SIG benefit the teacher, already underpaid, and/or the student generally under-prepared? Over the past 25 years we have seen the role of the teacher change from that of educator first and behavioral manager second, to that of behavioral manager first, and if their is time, educator second.

    Dear Colleagues,

Although there is a growing acknowledgement that children are at risk for various forms of maltreatment (including physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect), greater attention needs to be directed toward the role of educators in addressing victimized children and creating school environments that are protective and responsive. This may be accomplished through the training of educators and the creation of educational settings that champion the rights of children to be treated as persons with dignity. In order to promote research into the evolving area of child maltreatment and the promotion of children's rights, we are proposing the formation of an American Educational Research Association (AERA) Special Interest Group (SIG) entitled Research in Global Child Advocacy. This SIG will focus on research that examines efforts to protect children and addresses individual characteristics, systemic barriers, cultural beliefs, and societal trends that may contribute to abusive practices. The process of forming a SIG requires active AERA members to indicate their interest by emailing their name and address to berson@tempest.coedu.usf.edu. In addition to an active association in AERA (http://aera.net), SIG members will be assessed annual dues of $2.00 to cover expenses such as newsletters, postage, and operating expenses. To aid us in reaching as many potential, interested members, please forward this Email to other colleagues.

    Sincerely,
    Michael and Ilene Berson
