NIH Child Abuse & Neglect TA Workshop

Sorry if this has already been posted...I couldn't remember seeing it
here and thought this list was perfect for distribution of this
opportunity to promote NIMH support for child maltreatment related
research.

Re: NIH Child Abuse & Neglect Technical Assistance Workshop
Date: April 27, 1998

We have received the announcement from the NIH Workgroup on Child Abuse
& Neglect regarding the technical assistance workshop scheduled for
June 30-July 2. This is an excellent opportunity for child abuse & neglect
(and related subjects) researchers. This announcement relates to an earlier
list serv message (April 8) on the subject. Note that the deadline for
application letters is MAY 28 and that they should be sent to NIH.

NIH Child Abuse and Neglect
Technical Assistance Workshop

The National Institutes of Health Workgroup on Child
Abuse and Neglect will sponsor a technical assistance
workshop June 30, July 1 and July 2 to encourage
submission of child abuse and neglect research
applications to NIH institutes. The workshop will be
held in Bethesda, Maryland. We plan to invite 2
different groups of researchers to the workshop:

1. Experienced researchers who do not conduct
research on child abuse or neglect but who have
received NIH funding for research in areas that are
relevant to child abuse or neglect and who would be
interested in extending their research to abused
populations or making their research more relevant to
understanding abuse and neglect. Such related
research might include, but is not limited to physical,
behavioral and psychological aspects of childhood
injury, parenting and family processes, sexual
development and behavior in children and
adolescents, risky behavior in adolescents, including
sexually risky behavior and substance use and abuse,
childhood adversity, including poverty and malnutrition,
and environmental influences on child and adolescent
mental health and on the occurrence or exacerbation
of chronic and acute diseases and medical condition
or recovery or rehabilitation from such diseases and
conditions.

2. Experienced child abuse and neglect researchers
who have not received prior NIH research funding but
who conduct child abuse and neglect research in
substantive areas in which various NIH institutes fund
research. Researchers might focus on
biomedical/pediatric, behavioral/psychosocial, or
intervention/services aspects of child abuse and
neglect.

The workshop agenda would include presentations
focused on NIH institutes' interest in issues in child
abuse and neglect and related research areas and
sessions on how to develop a competitive NIH
application (primarily oriented to researchers who
have not received prior NIH support), and sessions on
issues of conducting child abuse and neglect
research, such as recruitment of abused or abusive
samples, working with protective service agencies,
conducting research on child abuse and neglect in
social service and medical settings, and how to handle
mandated reporting requirements (primarily oriented to
researcher who have not conducted prior research on
abuse). Attendees would attend those sessions most
relevant to their interests.

This workshop is intended for experienced
researchers with postgraduate research training and
considerable research experience. One or more
workshops for newer, less experienced researchers
are planned for the future.

We are asking potential applicants to submit a brief
two or three page letter of interest in attending this
technical assistance workshop. Deadline for application
letters is May 28, 1998. The letter should briefly
describe: (1) the applicants' research experience in
the area of child abuse and neglect or related areas,
including funded research, (2) their research goals and
interests relevant to child abuse and neglect or
research that is relevant to understanding of child
abuse and neglect, (3) a research project that they
would be interested in developing into an NIH research
grant proposal, and (4) (optional) research studies or
interests in which they would be interested in
collaborating with other researchers. Such
collaborations might involve multisite collaborations
of researchers with the same interests or collaborations
among researchers with different types of research
expertise (for example, biomedical and behavioral
researchers).

The letter of application can be submitted to Pamela
Mitchell, NIMH, either by e-mail at pm28v@nih.gov, by
fax at (301) 480-4415, or by mail to Pamela Mitchell,
NIMH, Parklawn Building, Room 18C-17, Rockville,
Maryland 20857. Questions about the workshop itself
can be addressed to mgordon@nih.gov or by fax at
(301) 443 -4611. Workshop attendees would be
selected from applicants on the basis of research
experience, research interests, and relevance to the
research missions of the different NIH institutes.
Partial NIH support for workshop attendees is
expected.
