Although they were primarily interested in depression as an adult
outcome, the research of Toni Bifulco and Tiril Harris in London also
demonstrates the association between the experience of abuse (physical
as well as sexual) during childhood and subsequent relationships with
"unsupportive" figures. I happen to think their work is of unusually
high quality and is definitely worth seeking out.
