RE: Child Abuse Prevention Training

Hello,

I am not sure if Dr. David Kolko's program, Abuse-Focused CBT has been mentioned yet, but it specifically focuses on child physical abuse/excessive corporal punishment.

Sincerely,
Komal

I know Triple P very well Susan, but the study showed a lower rate of increase in child maltreatment rates in the intervention counties compared to the control counties, and still does not address my question with respect to its use in families where maltreatment has already occurred, where I have yet to see evidence of effectiveness.

Triple P is a multi-level program with effectiveness demonstrated at all levels, including for child maltreatment. The CDC recently funded a major trial in South Carolina in which country rates of maltreatment were reduced.

PCIT does have a proven track record in these circumstances, assuming that the abuse has stopped and parents are willing to make real changes in their parenting.  Also, evidence for PCIT is primarily for children between the ages of 2-7 years.  We have been using PCIT with child welfare clients (primarily neglect) since 2005 and have seen fairly good success, especially when coupled with Motivational Interviewing and regular clinical supervision.

Is there evidence that this program works in circumstances where there has been significant physical abuse? i thought that PCIT (parent child interaction therapy) had a demonstrable track record of success.

Hi Gordon,

You may want to consider Triple P. It's an evidenced-based parenting program originally developed out of Australia but with international dissemination, including the U.S.   The website link is: http://www.triplep-america.com/

Best wishes,

Hello all-

Im looking for a training resource to train 2-3 staff members in child abuse prevention and interventions with children and families who have experienced abuse and neglect. This would be a trainer or trainers activity for us, with these staff members going on to train our entire agency staff and community groups in both preventing child abuse and intervening.

Thanks in advance-
