Re: family decision making in child protection casework
To: Sue Foley
In response to your inquiry regarding family decision making in child
protection casework in terms of research or policy publications, I
would refer you to our documents database at the National
Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect Information. The
Clearinghouse collection contains over 20,000 documents related to
child abuse and neglect and child welfare. You can search on this
topic using the keyword "family group conferencing" alone or in
combination with such terms as "decision making" and "child safety."
A preliminary search on this topic yielded abstracts of such
documents as "International Survey of Innovative Programs with CPS
Linkages: Final Working Paper" published by the American Humane
Association, and "Family Group Conferences in Child Abuse and Neglect
Cases: Learning from the Experience of New Zealand" from the ABA
Center on Children and the Law.
You can search the Clearinghouse database yourself on-line at:
http://www.calib.com/nccanch/database
If you prefer, you can request a customized database search for a fee
from Clearinghouse staff by calling 800-FYI-3366.
For information regarding the implementation of models or policy, you
may wish to contact programs which are currently using family
group conferences, such as those run through the Dept. of Family and
Children's Services in San Jose, CA and the Office for Services to
Children and Families in Salem, OR. The Family Unity Project in
Sheridan, OR also provides consultation and training on family
decision making.
I hope this information is helpful.

Can any memebers advise of reserach or policy publications on this topic.
Particularly interested in models that are about setting up an agreed
protection plan for the child within the family.
