Colleagues,

About 2 years ago, I posted a note about our WorldSAFE(World Stidoes of
Abuse and the Family Environment) project.  We have been proposing to use a
network of social scientists and pediatricians trained in epidemiology to
conduct parallel surveys of child abuse and family violence in developing
countries in Asia, Africa, and South America.  Despite several planning
meetings at annual meetings of the International Clinical Epidemiology
Network, the development of the project has been slow as we have tried to
locate funds.  A Core interview component has been developed by the
Chilean, Colombian, Indian, and American collaborators and was put into a
field test in Nagpur, India this past year.  Those data were presented by
Dr. Dipty Jain at the Durham, New Hampshire Family Vilence conference this
past summer (a copy of Dr. Jain's presentation can be obtained from the
Family Resesarch Laboratory).

 I'm pleased to announce that we have received funding to hold a protocol
development meeting for 3 days in Queretaro, Mexico from Feb 14-16, 1998
and then field additional pilot studies in Egypt, Chile, and the
Philippines.  (It is likely that the Indian pilot study will be expanded to
a national survey with other funds.)  Investigators from the pilot studies
and from Zimbabwe and Brazil will be supported to come to this meeting.
Investigators from other developing countries will be invited although no
additonal funds are available to support travel.  If you would like more
