initiating and conducting research on children and families at risk for
maltreatment, family violence, or other adverse outcomes. The range of
research conducted by the FLDC is broad, involving cross-sectional and

program evaluations. In addition to conducting original research, the

and demonstration projects. As a senior member of the staff, the person in
this position will also be expected to identify funding sources, assist in
proposal preparation, and participate in strategic planning activities. The
successful candidate must hold a doctorate in a social science, public
health, social work, or a related discipline and have at least five years
experience in research on at-risk families and children as evidenced by a
strong record of publications and funded projects. Preference will be

research setting. Depending on qualifications and experience, the Center
will seek an adjunct appointment in an appropriate academic department
within the College of Human Ecology.

The Family Life Development Center

The FLDC was established by New York State in 1974, and is located within

to improve professional and public efforts to understand and deal with risk
factors in the lives of children, youth, families, and communities that
lead to family violence and neglect. It focuses on strategies and programs
to help vulnerable children and youth by strengthening families and
communities. The Center accomplishes its mission through research,
training, outreach, and education. Its projects focus on New York State,
the nation, and the international community. The Center receives core
funding from New York State and operates over $4 million in programs funded
through competitive grants and contracts. Drs. James Garbarino and John
Eckenrode are Co-Directors.
