an infamous case of child abuse
Can anyone help me find some information about a child abuse case in Quebec?
A few years ago, one of the ABC newsmagazines did a piece on a case of severe
child abuse at a Quebec orphanage in the forties and fifties. The victims had
come foward after many years to reveal the story. They were falsly declared to
be mentally retarded so that the nuns could receive a larger state subsidy for
their care. Because they were considered to be disabled, they were, by the
standards of the time, unadoptable, and therefore, the long term property of
the orphanage. In that capacity, they were used as an unpaid source of labor.
They were apparantly subjected to extreme abuse and neglect during that period.
Other than the ABC piece, I have only been able to find a fairly short NY Times
article. Can anyone direct me to any other articles, on-line sources, or better
still, any books on the subject. If this had happend here in the US, there
would be no shortage of information, but apparently, the US media considers
Canada not worthy of their coverage.
