The book by Linda Gordon is titled: Heroes of their own lives: The politics
and history of family violence (1988), New York, NY: Viking.

The University of Massachusetts, Harbor Campus, Boston, Healey Library has an
archive of early 19th century records from Massachusetts Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Children, Judge Baker Guidance Center, and the
Boston Children's Services -- all social service agencies beginning early to
late 1800's.
