RE: Doctoral Research Project

I do not see patients and so would not be able to provide assistance.  If you are going to contact clinic staff at a university, you need to go through university irb at that university to solicit participants.

Even at a free standing agency, you need agency permission to solicit participants and can’t solicit participants through individual therapists.

Subject: Doctoral Research Project

My name is Briana Hoffman and I am conducting research as a student in the Clinical Psychology doctoral program at Florida Institute of Technology alongside Felipa T. Chavez, Ph.D. I am investigating the effects of childhood sexual abuse and caregiver support on the individual’s feelings regarding the abuse and her overall well-being. I am contacting you to request your assistance in recruitment. If you provide therapy services to adult female survivors of childhood sexual abuse (or know others who do) I would like to ask you to share the following link (http://sexualabuse.questionpro.com) with any female clients whom you feel could handle the personal and sensitive nature of questions regarding sexual abuse experiences and their feelings about such experiences. Also, if you would like a PDF document of the questionnaire to approve before providing it to clients please email me at bhoffman2008@xxxxxxxxxx and I will send it to you.

Participants may find therapeutic value in considering their abuse experiences and other aspects of their lives. Participants will not be subjected to any physical pain or risk, but because some of the interview questions seek to solicit some personal information, no identifying information such as the participant’s name will be asked. Due to the personal and traumatic content of some of the questions, it is necessary that the participants be currently attending therapy for childhood sexual abuse and be able to contact you within 24 hours in the event of any negative reactions to the survey.

Initially, participants will be asked to complete a series of questions regarding their childhood sexual abuse history. They will then be prompted to a series of surveys regarding the support provided by their primary non-offending caregiver, their views related to their abuse, and their overall well-being. These surveys will take approximately 20 to 40 minutes to complete. Upon completion of the survey, participants may elect to enter a raffle for a $50 Amazon gift-card.

Thank you very much for your time! If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me, Felipa Chavez, Ph.D., or the chair of Florida Institute of Technology’s International Review Board, Lisa Steelman.
