What is canDL?
The
canDL is a database of citations of works relevant to NDACAN and to
secondary research. It is created and maintained by NDACAN using
RefWorks and is shared through RefShare. For many hyperlinks, full text
of an article is available or restricted depending upon the
database/publisher subscriptions of the user or the affiliated
university, company, or organization.
This database is an actively changing source. We
have decided to share it in its current state, and will be progressively
adding both current and historical citations. We will also be adding to
our website more links to folders of citations related to particular
datasets. If you notice any absent citations that you feel should be
included, please email them to
the NDACAN Acquisitions Assistant.
How Can I Use canDL?
You may search the NDACAN database via traditional
fields (e.g. author, journal, publication year, and descriptor). In
addition to standard citation information, the database may be searched
with the following terms using the Advanced Search feature:
1. _Dataset Name/Number - This field is the
NDACAN dataset to which the citation is relevant (e.g. NSCAW or 117)
2. _Category - This field encompasses the
following definitions:
-
User - Data for work was obtained from
NDACAN
Contributor - Researcher in the initial data collection
effort created work
Unaffiliated - Work related to a NDACAN held dataset that
was obtained outside of NDACAN (e.g. from contributor)
Statistical - Publication relating to statistics, secondary
data, etc.
Measure - Publication relating to measures used by NDACAN
contributors
Relevant - Related to child maltreatment, although not
directly related to archive datasets
Inquire - Relationship of author to
NDACAN needs to be investigated before a label can be applied
You may export or print your search results in a
variety of output styles.
What output styles can I use?
You may choose to view the searchable database in standard view, full
view, one line/cite view, APA, AMA, MLA, or NDACAN APA, a version of APA
style being tweaked by NDACAN staff which is more consistent with recent
changes in APA style. When creating a bibliography, you may choose from
among the above listed styles, or may choose among any of the available
RefWorks output styles. You may also export your results into another
citation management program (e.g. EndNote, Reference Manager) and choose
any output style offered by the software.
Please understand that the output from this database will require
proofreading and formatting. Although the bibliographic output should be
in a generally proper format, it may have errors. For example, in APA
format, RefWorks is unable to always identify proper nouns to capitalize
them. Therefore, the user will need to do this. Also, when the publisher
is the same as the author, you must type "Author" in the publisher field
for APA format to be correct. Other APA style issues are continually
being addressed by NDACAN staff through use of the output editor. Please
use the NDACAN APA output style for citations closest to proper APA
format. If you notice any particular style errors, missing fields, or
general errors, please email
the NDACAN Acquisitions Assistant.
What are the other links?
Aside from
the link to
canDL,
you will find links to subsets of
canDL
which contain
citations of publications related to one dataset or topic. All of the
citations found in these subsets can also be found in the
canDL.
